Choosing the right fishing rod for you!
Choosing the right fishing rod for you!
Choosing the right fishing rod can make all the difference in your fishing experience. It’s also a really personal decision. What makes a rod right for you won't be the same for someone else.
A good fishing rod should be comfortable to use, durable, and also sensitive enough to detect even the slightest bite in the water.
Here are just some of our top tips to consider when selecting your new fishing rod.
Top tip # 1: Length
The length of the rod is an important consideration when selecting the right fishing rod for you. Longer rods can cast further and provide better line control, while shorter rods are more manoeuvrable and easier to handle. For beginners, we would recommend getting a 6-7 foot rod as a good all-around length.
Top tip # 2: Action
The action of a rod refers to how much the rod flexes when pressure is applied to the tip. A fast action rod bends mostly at the tip, while a slow action rod bends throughout the entire length of the rod. A medium action rod provides a balance between sensitivity and power, making it a good choice for most fishing situations and the type of rod we would recommend for a beginner.
Top tip #3: Power
The power of a rod refers to how much force is required to bend the rod. Light power rods are more flexible and are ideal for small fish and light tackle, while heavy power rods are stiffer and provide more power for larger fish and heavier tackle. Medium power rods provide a balance between sensitivity and power and so similar to the action, this option makes the rod good choice for most fishing situations and therefore a good choice for beginners also.
Top tip #4: Material
Fishing rods are made from a variety of materials, including graphite, fibreglass, and composite materials. Graphite rods are lightweight and sensitive, making them a good choice for finesse fishing techniques. Fibreglass rods are more durable and have more give, making them a good choice for heavier fishing applications. Composite materials combine the best qualities of both graphite and fibreglass, making them a good all-around choice.
Top tip #5: Handle
The handle of a fishing rod is an important consideration when selecting a fishing rod. Look for a handle that you find comfortable to hold and is able to provide you with a good grip. Cork handles are a popular choice for their comfort and durability, while foam handles are lightweight and provide a good grip.
Selecting the right fishing rod for you is an important decision and you want to be sure that you pick the best rod that feels comfortable and provides you with the right sensitivity and power for the type of fishing you plan to do.
